An Evening with Abelardo Morell

Come and listen to one of today's most compelling photographers talk about the creative process. Abelardo Morell is a true original, combining classic technique with a new vision to produce images we've never seen before. Working in a medium in which artistic vision is too often overshadowed by technical glitz, Abelardo creates photographic images that "refresh how people see the world." He uses a concept embraced by Aristotle and refined during the Renaissance: the camera obscura. Based on the most basic common denominator of the imaging process, the focusing of light, the camera obscura takes on new life in Morell's hands, where his imaginative and creative use of the simple device simultaneously nods to the past and catapults us into the future. Featured in the May 2011 National Geographic, Abelardo Morell's work has been called "one of the most original and enthralling bodies of work in contemporary photography."

About Abelardo Morell

Born in Cuba in 1948, Abelardo Morell came to the United States in 1962. Since earning an undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College and an MFA from Yale University School of Art, he has been honored with a Cintas grant, a Guggenheim fellowship, a Rappaport Prize, and an Altunas Foundation grant. Morell's work has been featured in more than 70 museums worldwide, including MOMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He has published a photographic illustration of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and his books include A Camera in a Room, A Book of Books, Camera Obscura, and a monograph, Abelardo Morell.
